Ubisoft, through Assassin’s Creed Infinity, is contemplating major changes for the series’ future, with the goal of offering experiences from various genres at varying costs, therefore abandoning traditional serialization. This, at least, is according to Marc-Alexis Côté, the creative director of Syndicate and Odyssey’s producer.
“I think the approach with Infinity allows us to have different sensations and dimensions at the same time,” Côté stated. “Not everything needs to be a 150-hour RPG, right? Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla taught us that you don’t have to release an action RPG every year.”
The projects presented at the Ubisoft Showcase last Saturday basically confirm the words of Côté. Assassin’s Creed Mirage, for example, will offer an experience more similar to the old games in the series, while Codename Red instead will be an action RPG that will continue the path started by Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla.
Codename Hexe will be characterized by eerie and dark atmospheres and may have horror veins. Then there is also Codename Invictus, a project entirely focused on online multiplayer.
Côté also stated that the many experiences featured in Assassin’s Creed Infinity will be of varying sizes and prices, implying that we may see further low-cost games like Mirage in the future, if not fully free content.
“Sometimes you’ll also get free experiences, which I believe is a terrific approach to motivate players to return,” Côté explained. “We had a good experience with the crossover stories for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey; it drove a lot of people back to the game and got a lot of gamers interested in Valhalla, so I think we’ll keep that in mind when we construct Infinity.”
