Microsoft is developing Android 11 system for Surface Duo folding screen

Microsoft’s Surface Duo was originally released in October last year. Since its release, Microsoft has remained relatively silent. According to recent leaks, Microsoft’s Surface Duo could be launched as early as August, equipped with the Snapdragon 855 processor and 11-megapixel camera.

Last year, Microsoft stated that Surface Duo will be equipped with two 5.6-inch AMOLED screens, each with a resolution of 1800×1350.

Although Microsoft did not expand much on software and hardware when it announced the Surface Duo last year, recent leaks indicate that the device will be equipped with 6GB of memory and 64GB or 256GB storage options.

Microsoft has confirmed that the Surface Duo does not support 5G and uses an older chipset because the Snapdragon 865 processor requires smartphone manufacturers to include a separate 5G baseband chip.

Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the two screens of the Surface Duo are fixed together by a hinge, and Android 10 is pre-installed to run.

Now, foreign media Windows Latest reports that Microsoft has started to develop an Android 11 system for Surface Duo. Surface Duo will still initially run on Android 10, but it will soon get an update to Android 11, which may take a few weeks or a month.

Surface Duo decided to use Android 10 instead of the latest Android 11, related to the updated release schedule and possible compatibility issues.

Microsoft is also optimizing first-party applications such as the Edge browser and Outlook to support dual-screen Surface Duo. Microsoft is currently planning to launch the Surface Duo in the next few weeks to compete with Samsung Galaxy Fold 2.

According to the new job list, Microsoft will also add more Android engineers to its Surface Duo team. For example, Microsoft is currently looking for “Engineering Director” to create a new experience for Surface Duo.”
