The chip also uses ARM’s unreleased Mali MP20 GPU, which is based on the Borr (Nordic mythological code) microarchitecture. Google seems to have removed Samsung ’s ISP and NPU to use the self-developed Visual Core ISP and NPU.
Google may use the upcoming chipset in its future Pixel smartphones (midrange models or first launches), Chrome OS devices and even data center servers. According to ETNews, Samsung created a new “Custom SoC” team in its device solutions business unit earlier this year. The team was led by Park Jin-Pyo who did not work on the Foundry ASIC team until last year.
The new team may also provide chipsets for Oculus AR / VR products. Samsung ’s new Custom SoC team currently has about 30 members from various business units including Samsung LSI, but there are plans to expand in the next few years.
